CwC Co-Chair: Dr Nick Goulden MB, ChB, MRCP, FRCPath, PhD
Medical Research Director, CHILDREN with CANCER UK
Nick Goulden retired from Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he was a Consultant in Paediatric Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, in December 2015. He subsequently took up the role of Medical Research Director at Children with Cancer UK on a part-time basis.
Nick was instrumental in incorporating the detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) into treatment stratification for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and through his involvement in the last two national clinical trials for ALL, he has helped deliver amongst the best outcomes achieved internationally for this disease.
Professor Denis Henshaw BSc, PhD
Honorary Scientific Director, CHILDREN with CANCER UK
Emeritus Professor of Human Radiation Effects, University of Bristol
Denis Henshaw retired from Bristol University in 2011. His early research investigated the intake and retention of natural alpha-radioactive particles in the human body. In 1990, he revealed an association between domestic radon exposure and the incidence of childhood leukaemia. He also showed independent associations between traffic pollution and radon, with levels of radioactive polonium-210 accumulated in children’s teeth.
Denis is also interested in the underlying mechanisms by which magnetic fields affect childhood leukaemia and other adverse health risks. His current interests centre on a range of environmental exposures that may contribute to childhood cancer risk.
